Before you begin vacuuming your house, get a slightly damp cloth (microfiber or hand towel both are fine), and dust any furniture (desks, dressers, etc.) with it first.
Anything that falls onto the ground you can easily vacuum up, plus it will help reduce the amount of dust that gets stirred up and blown around the room as your vacuum cleaner moves around the room blowing air through its exit vents. The added bonus is that you will also probably sneeze less while cleaning. Score!
